The WashU Medicine Gastrointestinal (GI)/Liver Pathology Service is committed to providing expert interpretation of both routine and complex gastrointestinal (GI), liver, biliary tract, pancreas biopsy and resection specimens. One of the main reasons healthcare providers choose GI and Liver pathology service is its expertise. The 11-member team led by Dr. Xiuli Liu includes GI and Liver pathologists with more than 100 years of combined experience in pathology practice in a large and challenging multidisciplinary academic environment. Eight pathologists received formal fellowship training in several prestigious programs. The team’s interests and diagnostic expertise cover the full range of gastrointestinal, liver, and pancreas diseases, including Barrett esophagus; inflammatory bowel disease; hepatic and pancreatic diseases; transplant pathology; and cancer and precancerous conditions. Pathologists provide expert diagnosis and second opinion on more than 26,000 cases annually, including those with the most challenging, rare, and complex GI and Liver pathology. The team’s combined expertise provides trusted diagnoses for providers and patients.

Milestones

The service has expanded to local community hospitals in recent years, signaling a growing demand for its expertise. In 2021, the team began providing GI and HPB pathology to Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. In 2023, the team started to offer its services at Memorial Hospitals Belleville and Shiloh with great success.

In addition to handling clinical responsibilities, pathologists hold positions in professional societies and organizations. They are frequently invited to give lectures and presentations at national and international pathology meetings, and conferences sponsored by various clinical societies. Pathologists actively contribute to the advancement of their field through independent and collaborative research and extensive publications in leading medical journals and many book chapters in GI and HPB pathology.
