The specialty of Hematopathology plays a critical role in diagnosis and therapy of patients with benign and malignant hematologic disorders, and members of Hematopathology section work closely with clinical colleagues in Hematology and Hematology/Oncology to ensure the best care for our patients. Hematopathology section evaluates a wide variety of specimen types, including peripheral blood, bone marrow aspirates, clot preparations and core biopsies, body fluids, lymph nodes and other solid tissue biopsies from Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Saint Louis Children’s Hospital, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, Memorial Hospitals Belleville and Shiloh, as well as subset of cases from Missouri Baptist Medical Center. The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center, and Hematopathology section supports clinical trials and specialty consultations for patients from Missouri and beyond.

Milestones
The Hematopathology section includes seven board-certified hematopathologists with extensive experience. The expertise and resources of Hematopathology section allow for a comprehensive diagnostic approach to be applied to each specimen, using combination of immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, molecular studies, and/or cytogenetic analysis to arrive at a final diagnosis. The faculty members participate in educational programs in hematopathology specialty at national and international levels, and are actively engaged in clinical and translational research.
