The Intraoperative Consultation service (frozen section) provides diagnostic pathology services for patients undergoing surgeries at multiple locations throughout the BJC Healthcare system including Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital (BJWCH), and Memorial Hospitals Belleville and Shiloh. The team provides remote diagnostic services to multiple locations through an innovative digital workflow developed in-house that digitizes slides and electronically relays diagnoses into surgical suites.
The frozen section service includes 21 board-certified subspecialist pathologists with extensive experience in intraoperative consultation. The service handles a high volume of specimens (around 7000/year in 2023) 24/7, 365 days a year, and assists in tissue procurement for approved research. The performance of this service is reviewed by a quality assurance team through monitoring of turnaround times and diagnostic accuracy. The team strives to provide diagnoses within an optimal time to reduce surgical time and provide optimal care for patients. Additionally, the frozen section service plays a pivotal role in educating residents to prepare and interpret frozen sections.
