Section Head: Daniel Miller, MD, PhD
The Head and Neck Pathology service is dedicated to examining a diverse variety of specimens including from the upper aerodigestive tract, salivary glands and thyroid/parathyroid glands. The team encounters an array of complex lesions and disease entities, including those in emerging areas. Pathologists increasingly use molecular genetics techniques to identify and reclassify several tumors.
The Head and Neck Pathology section includes: Dr. Daniel Miller, Section Head, with interests in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma, technology development in surgical pathology, and head and neck cancer survivorship, and Dr. Katherine Schwetye, who has extensive experience in oncologic otolaryngology and a clinical interest in surgical neuropathology.

Highlights
Head and Neck Pathology is one of the oldest subspecialty services in the Department. It was truly solidified as an independent service with subspecialized faculty under the leadership of Dr. Samir El-Mofty, DMD, PhD, who came to the Medical School in the early 1990s after the closure of WashU’s School of Dental Medicine where he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Pathology. During his time as Section Head, he also served as President of the North American Society of Head and Neck Pathology. Upon his retirement, Rebecca Chernock, MD, took over as Section Head in 2018. She also served as Vice-President (2018-2020) and then President (2020-2022) of the North American Society of Head and Neck Pathology, having previously been the Treasurer from 2012-2018. In 2025, the torch was passed to Daniel Miller, MD, PhD.
