Laboratory Hematology

Overview

The Laboratory Hematology Section is within the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine (LGM) and located within the state-of-the-art 680,000 square-foot Steven & Susan Lipstein BJC Institute of Health (BJCIH) at WashU Medicine.  The section specializes in the clinical laboratory testing of blood cells and cellular components used in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of hematologic diseases, such as anemia, bleeding and clotting disorders, leukemia/lymphoma, and immune deficiency.  Faculty have expertise in complete blood count (CBC) and body fluid analysis, morphologic assessment of blood cells, hemostasis and coagulation testing, flow cytometry, hemoglobin electrophoresis, and urinalysis.

Highlights

The Laboratory Hematology section provides medical laboratory director support and clinical pathologist interpretations to the hematology laboratories of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, as well as the Barnes-Jewish Hospital flow cytometry laboratory (which serves multiple BJC Hospitals and five Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center locations within the St. Louis metropolitan area of Missouri and Illinois).  In addition to providing expert clinical laboratory oversight, the section faculty are prominent members and leaders in professional societies, conduct leading scientific research (clinical, translational, and basic science), have published in many high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and have won numerous awards, honors, and distinctions in their fields.
