Highlights
Washington University is the home institution for the NCI-funded Route 66 Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) in Endometrial Cancer. Dr. Ian Hagemann, a member of the Gynecologic Pathology section, serves as the co-director of the Biospecimen, Metabolomics and Pathology Core for this program. The field of gynecologic pathology is evolving from pure light microscopic diagnosis to one that leans on molecular pathology, which is a strength of the Gynecologic Pathology section. Three team members are board-certified molecular pathologists. The service has been actively involved in molecular diagnosis and pioneered next-generation sequencing for diagnosis. Most recently, Dr. Sun was instrumental in the in-house development of a solid tumor tissue molecular diagnostic panel, GatewaySeq.
Gynecologic Pathology service members are often recognized for diagnostic excellence. Two pathologists were named multiple times as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in St. Louis. Faculty have held roles as a member of the ISGyP LiVE working group of the International Society of Gynecological Pathologists, the co-moderator of the monthly global ISGyP LiVE journal club, and a member of the Gynecologic Expert Panel for the 8th and 9th editions of the AJCC staging manual. In 2023, Dr. Sun was named to the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) 40 Under 40, which honors her achievements and leadership in pathology and laboratory medicine.
